For our work, we use the extensive collection of wooden toys of the Oberammergau museum as models. In the early attempts to make copies of those toys it became clear that a number of lost techniques and materials had to be re-discovered.
All the parts of the Schnürlkasperl are made from the stem of a special spruce, which is split into shingles. The exclusive use of woodcarving knives produces the desired shape.
The fiber structure of each shingle, the carving of each head and other parts make each single toy unique.
The limbs are set by small wooden dowels. They are movable around the dowel axis and connected with each other by cords. Pulling the downward cord causes the figure to lift arms and legs.
Another characteristic is the typical Oberammergau painting style known as "Fassmalerei". Traditionally used for the painting of church figures, a secret combination of pigments and laquers are layed on a base of chalk.
With our signet of cealing wax we guarantee, that all our figures are totally handmade and exclusively produced in Oberammergau only.
Have a lot of fun with the Schnürlkasperl!
